SAT 1 basically tests them for skills like critical thinking, aptitude, knowledge of mathematics and its applications, critical reading, communication skills, reasoning skills, the way you think and approach different types of problems etc.
So it is divided into 3 sections:Writing Section, Critical Reading Section and Mathematics section. You can score in the scale of minimum of 200 to maximum of 800 in each section making up a total maximum score of 2400.
Scoring Scheme
Each correct answer gives you 1 point. For incorrect answer you lose 1/4 of a point in case it is a multiple choice question, nothing is subtracted from your score if student-response question is incorrect.Unanswered questions are given zero point.
Math Section Sub-Sections
| Number of Questions | Time Allotted | Minutes Per Question |
| 20 | 25 | 1.25 (75 seconds) |
| 18 (8 regular + 10 grid type*) | 25 | 1.38 (about 82 seconds) |
| 16 | 20 | 1.25 (75 seconds) |
| 54 | 70 minutes |
*In grid type questions you need to write your answers instead of marking the correct choice.
So Mathematics section is for 70 minutes comprising of 54 questions. You are tested for Number and operations; algebra 1 ,
algebra 2 and functions; geometry; statistics, probability, and data analysis.
As you can see you score the same for each answered question irrespective of their difficulty level
and you also don't have much time to answer each question ( an average of 1.29 minutes).
So it is advisable not to get stuck on a single question for than 1 minute. You are required to solve
as many questions as possible within the limited time constraint. So a smart
SAT candidate would not be the one who takes 3 minutes to solve a challenging question
but the one who solves 3 easy questions within 3 minutes. Scoring high is
really important because increased competition and limited seats
So how can you score high to make it to your dream college? The basic
strategy is to know the faster ways of solving the questions rather than
the typical mechanical way.
Of course strategies alone cannot make you win unless
you have a proper understanding of the topics.
The minimal requirement of SAT score by different college or universities
depends upon the average value of the SAT score submitted to them. Of course students with higher score are given preference and have the added advantage of easily getting admissions in top colleges. You need to submit your SAT
test score to colleges by the deadline mentioned on their website.
